Ben Hur – Othello Capanna – 1959

This Capanna tunic and helmet is from the Roman Chariots scene from this religious epic famously starring Charlton Heston.

Ben Hur was top grossing film of 1959 and won 11 Academy Awards including Best Actor – a number only matched in later years by Titanic.

One of the scenes which did not make the movie was at the beginning of the race, Heston shook the reins and nothing happened, the horses remained motionless. Finally at the top of the set someone yelled ‘giddy-up!! The horses then roared into action and Heston was flung backward off the chariot.

When the production was over, MGM was afraid that the small-time local Italian producers would use the leftover sets as backgrounds for their own low-budget epics, so they destroyed all of the amazing sets.
